Wyvern Open Shore Competition
Wyvern Open Shore 2009 Fished Beesands/Slapton, South Devon, on 11th January 2009.
 The first Angling Trust Competition

113 competitors fished the first Angling Trust sea angling event at the Wyvern Open, on a day when the expected increasing winds and rain stayed away long enough for the event to be completed. The decision to extend the fishing times was vindicated with many fish being caught after dark resulting in a good weigh in of whiting in particular. The competition was judged on the best of two species but only a few anglers were able to find a second species, however the well deserved and popular winner with a combination of a dab and a whiting was Alex Parker, Chairman of the Wyvern Division , who was presented with the top prize of 150 and a place in the National Guernsey Final to be fished later in the year.. The prize table was valued at over 900 and the main sponsor was Anyfish Anywhere, Torquay and other tackle shops and retail outlets in the area. Thanks were extended to the Cricketers Inn, Beesands for their hospitality.

Wyvern Presenation Night

Email from Mike Spiller. - The Wyvern Division of the Angling Trust held its Presentation Night last night at Exeter and around 75 people turned up to collect their awards. The weather certainly must have put off some from turning up, the weather was dreadful with gales and heavy rain!

The evening started off with an interesting talk on the history of ABU reels by Nick McMurtrie from North Devon.  Nick also had some 140 reels on show including a very rare ABU 5000.  Tips were also given on reel cleaning etc.

The presentation of all the Divisional awards were made next.  This included the fish of the month awards and the main trophy winners from October 2007 through to September 2008.   The main winners were :-   Best Lady Shinta Bevan-Jones (Brixham SAC) Flounder 3-13-12.   Best Flatfish Stuart Gray (Rodbenders SAC) Flounder 4-0-0.  Best Bass Mike Spiller (Honiton SAC) 11-9-8.  Best Conger John Heather (Brixham SAC) 102-8-0.  Best Bream Sean Coulson (Brixham SAC) 4-5-2 (shore).  Watney Mann cup for the best junior boat fish went to Bobby Drew (Teignmouth SAS) with a Cuckoo Wrasse of 1-13-0.  The Dennis Smith award for the best shore caught fish from a junior went to Steven Rathbone (West Bay SAC) with a Pouting of 2-1-13.  The overall best specimen of the year wins the Castle Trophy and this went to Andy Copping (Brixham SAC) who had a Blonde Ray from the shore of 23-14-8 (239%) this also won Andy 100 for a charity of his choice which is going to be the Rowcroft Hospice.

The Division would like to thank everyone for coming along on the awful night and hopes everyone will carry on supporting the Wyvern Division and the new Angling Trust.

Anyone needing more details on either should contact Mike Spiller on 01404 43397.
